My Role Model
And now a word about my role model… pledge widget2 Mom, definitely mom! She did things in the 1960s that women just didn’t. In fact, she was one of the first women stock brokers in the country when she was registered in 1964. She’d been a secretary for a brokerage firm up until then. She took one look at the men on the other side of her desk and said to...

If State Signs Were Truthful
justinhalpern: I did this a few years back with my co-workers Justin Thomas and @corygavinjones.  The best part about it was, I got a whole bunch of angry letters from people who lived in Arkansas and in every one of those letters, there was at least one spelling error.

Saint Patrick's Day 2011
Do I celebrate St. Paddy’s? [Glenariff. County Antrim, Ireland] (LOC) No, I’m a Polish girl. I remember green bread on St. Patrick’s day when I was in grade school, though. I think that completely turned me off, and at a rather tender age. I used to play Irish traditional folk music on the fiddle and flute. I got a lot of gigs around that time and enjoyed...

Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner?
If I could choose just one? Here’s what I’d do. Cutting the pies and cakes at the barbeque dinner, Pie Town, New Mexico Fair (LOC) I’d have to go with dinner. I’m a chronic insomniac, so breakfast usually doesn’t happen or, when it does, it’s quick and uninteresting. I’m not a fan of traditional sandwich fare that makes up most...

Yo, Dinner!
I’m using up the last of the leftovers to put together something really, really nice. The hubby bought a whole, cut up chicken last week. I only used half for a recipe, and stuck the other half in the freezer. That came out today. His husband-ness also loaded up on kale, which we love with lots of garlic. I cut up the rest of that, and also added some collard greens, for contrast. And...

But of course… catalogliving: The new bathroom mirrors overwhelmed Gary with nostalgia for his sea-faring days when he used to reach out of his porthole for a bottle of Zyrtec.

On Being in the Spotlight
My night to shine! Fiddling About I’ve been on stage a few times a few times. I used to play in a folk music band. It was a Celtic and Traditional British band and I was one of two fiddle players. We were a great band! We were hired to accompany Irish step dancers for an event at one point. We were playing to an auditorium of, perhaps, 1,000 people. I remember taking...

How I Stay Focused
How do I stay focused? Here’s how! To-do list book. Actually, I have a helper: a check-boxed to-do list that I try to finish every day. I incorporate easy tasks with more challenging ones to keep me focused. Sometime, I find that relaxing and taking a break also helps the focus when I return to the task

Niagara Falls. No, It Does, Really!
A friend of mine sent some amazing pictures of a place I know pretty well: Niagara Falls, New York and Niagara Falls, Ontario. I grew up in Buffalo, New York, a stone’s throw from the Falls and can place it in some of my earliest memories. I remember a long drive, taking either a “scenic route” through a parkway in Ontario or a “stinky” route through industrial scenes...

Three Countries I'd Like to Visit
Here are three countries I wouldn’t mind visiting. Osa and airplane England - liked it when I visited there before Australia - I know a bunch of people there, believe it or not Egypt - I’m a nut for pyramids and other examples of ancient architecture

“That’s what I love about reading: one tiny thing will interest you in a book,...”
– The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (via notwritenow) This is a nice quote and, you know, kind of true, although that’s an awful lot of books you’ve got there. You might also like to replace the word ‘book’ with ‘interesting article on the internet’ and call it procrastination. We...

If I Could Do One Evil Thing...
The writing prompt question: If there were no consequences, what’s the most evil thing I could do? unintended consequences [of a simple cracked mirror] Actually, I’d do nothing. If there were no consequences for me, there’d be none for anyone else, either. I’d hide.

Driving Me Nuts And I'm Not Talking
Today’s writing prompt - what’s driving me nuts today? My answer is below. STOP & SHOP Deluxe Mixed Nuts Oh my. We don’t want to go there. Really, we don’t. Just read the last 10 posts of my blog and you’ll have all the information we need. If you want to dig any deeper, take a Valium first. Or at least give one to me.

The Most Romantic Thing Anyone's Ever Done For Me
This was a writing prompt. It made me think, and I came up with the following: 1968 Dodge Polara 500 Ambulance Well, this is not going to sound very romantic, but it most certainly was an expression of love. Before my husband and I got together as partners, we were old friends. I had some health problems in the early 1990s and ended up needing emergency room care. I...

My Favorite Childhood Movie
I loved Mary Poppins when I was a kid. I was particularly fond of the adventures Mary Poppins and the children had when they entered the fantasy worlds created by Bert’s drawings. Then there was that fellow who loved to laugh and who rose to the ceiling every time he did! And how about the opening scenes, with all the stern nannies who got blown away? I would have loved a nanny like Mary...

5 Things I'm Looking Forward to This Week
A great meal Thanksgiving and food go hand-in-hand. I’ll be providing two of the goodies - pumpkin pie and pecan-cranberry stuffing. Yum! Visits from family We’ll be here for the holiday. My brother- and sister-in-law are coming into town with their two little boys. The older I get, the less I enjoy travel. I’m just an old fart now. Not traveling Speaking of old...

My Dream Job
Black Ink Grunge Stamp Texture Social Media Icons Actually, I have the job I love. I wish it brought in more money, but that may just be a matter of time. I do three things: I’m a social media consultant, working with older business owners who are totally baffled by this environment. I also founded and manage a social network for small business in my immediate...

The Lesser of Two Evils
Body odor or bad breath? Who’s asking these questions?! those were the old days Oh, that’s not fair! What a terrible thing to do to my state of mind right now. Um, well if I had to choose I think I’d go with the body odor part, unless we’re talking about somebody who really lives rough. Somehow I can handle expired deodorant better than a full-on...

My Cure for Boredom
Rules of podcast engagement How do I cure boredom? A book. A walk outside. A podcast. A cooking project. A little work around the house. I suppose we could always bring the plumbers and excavators back. They were an adventure, to be sure. Boredom is a bit of a luxury when you’re self-employed. If you’re doing it right, you’re busy most of the time! ...

Beets and Cabbage
I went for comfort food tonight. If you’re Polish - or any Slavic nationality, actually - borscht/barszcz is part of your structural DNA. This version is from Ukraine and is part of a massive collection of Polish recipes by Robert Strybel. You don’t buy this book unless your name ends in -ski and vowels are not part of your way of thinking. Ready for a shot at this? Let’s go!...

Little Miss Muffet and the Spider A spider loves its work That depends on the size of the spider. In general, spiders are not too bad. If they’re not too big, I’ll collect them on a piece of paper and slide them outside. If they’re big and hairy, I move out.

My Favorite Candy
Put me in front of a candy counter and I pick… Cherry licorice. Actually, all I can seem to find are the strawberry Twizzlers that come in those little cellophane packs. I like the consistency, the gummy nature, and the taste. The cherry ones, whenever I can find them, are the best, though!
